Liquidity matters even more as PE exits drop to new lows

In Q3 2023, private equity (PE) exits took a hit, plunging to levels not seen since the global financial crisis. PitchBook's latest US PE Breakdown shows the value of PE exits in the 3Q dropped by a staggering 40.7% to $44.1 billion, dashing hopes of a sustained recovery.

The total exit value was the lowest since 2008, apart from the Q2 lockdown period in 2020. The outlook for exit activity in the remainder of 2023 appears uncertain, with the threat of a looming maturity wall of assets.
